Jazz Progression In F And Bar Chord Positions

Bar Chords

I’ve been working on a quick Jazz progression in F my instructor gave me to practice. The goal with this progression was to teach me bar chords Major, Minor, Dominant 7th and Minor 7th positions with roots on the 6th and 5th strings.

Dan Auerbach - Trouble Weighs A Ton

Dan Auerbach Keep It Hid

This is the opening track to Dan Auerbach’s solo album Keep It Hid. Dan of course is the guitarist and lead singer of The Black Keys. It’s a great album and if you like The Black Keys you should check it out. Actually, you should check it out even if you don’t like The Black Keys because it has a different feel.

The song is pretty straight forward. Mostly G and C chords with a few D’s thrown in and a brief appearance by the Am chord. There is a capo on the second fret. You can find the tabs for the song here.

The Black Keys - I’ll Be Your Man

The Black Keys - The Big Come Up

I think I’m going to start a new feature here where Monday’s will be the day I post video of songs I’m learning. Twitter has Music Mondays so why shouldn’t I. I’m not sure I can commit to EVERY Monday, but I’ll try to at least make it every other Monday.

I’ve had a bit of a Black Keys obsession since I first heard them about a year ago. The moment I heard the opening to Thickfreakness I knew this was going to be a band I liked. Well, since then I’d say The Black Keys have accounted for about 80% of my music rotation. One of my favorite songs by them is I’ll Be Your Man off of The Big Come Up… and it just so happens it’s pretty easy to play. When I say it’s easy to play, I mean I can play it for the most part (my apologies in advance to The Black Keys).

String Theory

Guitar String

I’ve always wondered if I could really tell the difference in sound between two sets of strings of the same gauge on the same guitar. So when I took my new Gibson Les Paul Goltop over to San Francisco Guitarworks to get a proper setup I also had them put on a new set of strings (I could have done it myself, but I was feeling lazy and they were working on my guitar anyway).

But, before taking the Les Paul into the shop I did a quick recording on the current strings so I could compare them to the new strings once I got my guitar back.

Keeley Fuzz Head - Quick Review

Fuzz Head

As I posted last week, I went out and tested a EHX Big Muff Pie and a Analogman Sunface NKT 275. The one fuzz box I wanted to try but didn’t because nobody had one available locally was the Keeley Fuzz Head. When I was listening to samples of fuzz boxes, the Keeley was actually my favorite out of them all. But obviously you can’t tell anything about how somethings really going to sound off of a YouTube video. Even trying them out in the store only gives you a little idea of how it will work for you. It’s not until you get things home and use it with your gear that you’ll really know how you’ll like it.
